Premium Polishing & Buffing Cloths
FAQ's: Polishing & Buffing Cloths
-
A buffing cloth is a purpose built towel used to remove polish, wax, compound or sealant residue after application. Its job is to lift leftover product cleanly into the fibres rather than smear it across the paint. In detailing, the terms buffing cloth and polishing cloth are often used interchangeably. Both refer to cloths designed for safe residue removal and final finishing work. A good buffing cloth should feel soft but still have enough bite to properly clear residue without dragging. The key is using the right cloth for the stage of work. Heavier residue from compound may require a different polishing cloth compared to a light final wipe after wax.

GSM affects how a polishing cloth feels and how much residue it can hold, but higher is not automatically better. For polish and compound removal, a mid range GSM polishing cloth often works best. Something too light may not have enough fibre density to grab residue properly. Something too heavy can feel bulky and may smear if overloaded. As a general guide:
- 300-400GSM works best for most polish, coating and compound removal.
- 350-450GSM plush cloths are ideal for buffing stages.

Polishing cloths used for compound or heavy polish should be washed as soon as possible after use. Dried compound can stiffen fibres and reduce performance. Follow these guidelines:
- Wash separately from general laundry.
- Use warm water between 30-40 degrees.
- Use a mild liquid detergent.
- Avoid fabric softener and bleach.
- Air dry or tumble dry low.

It really does depend on the condition of the cloth. but below are some guidelines: If a buffing cloth has been used to level ceramic coating, it will likely become stiff as the coating cures within the fibres. Once that happens, it is no longer safe for delicate paintwork. If the cloth is still soft, clean and free from hardened product, it may be reused for non critical polishing tasks. However, it is generally best practice to dedicate specific polishing cloths to coating work and not return them to regular paint correction use.
