Compound Kits

4.9from 290 reviews across this range

Compound kits give you the full cut and polish set in one box, a heavy cutting compound for the deep stuff, an intermediate one step for everyday swirls, and a finishing polish to bring up the gloss. Buying them together costs less than three separate tubs, and whatever your paint throws at you, the right cut is already on the shelf. We stock our own Waxit kit alongside Scholl Concepts, Koch Chemie and Rupes.

FAQ's: Compound Kits

Some kits are the full cut to finish set, some are a brand's trial pack, and every one comes with a different pad recommendation. It's a fair bit to take in if this is your first paint correction. These are the questions we get asked the most.

Still unsure? Ask us ›
What comes in a compound kit, and why three compounds?
Most of the full kits follow the same pattern. A cutting compound with a coarse abrasive for deep scratches, oxidation and heavy swirls. An intermediate compound, often called a one step, that removes moderate defects and finishes well on its own. And a finishing polish that barely cuts but pulls out the last of the haze and brings up the gloss. Some brands do it differently, the Rupes trial kits pair one compound with its matching pads so you can try a cut before committing to the full range.

Having the three cuts on hand is useful because paint defects aren't all the same depth. A cutting compound on a car that only has light wash marks removes clear coat for no reason. A finishing polish on a keyed door does nothing. With the set you can match the cut to the damage, panel by panel. If you'd rather keep it to one tub, that's what an all in one is for.
Do I need the full kit, or will one compound do?
Best case is having all three. You usually won't know what your paint needs until you're halfway through the first panel, and having the full set on the shelf means you can step up or step down without stopping the job and waiting on a delivery. A neglected car, a fresh respray with sanding marks, or anything with deep scratches will use every tub in the box.

If you only want one, grab an intermediate compound. A well kept daily driver with swirls from the car wash is usually fixed with that and a medium pad, and it's the most forgiving place to start. If you don't own a machine yet, our polisher kits bundle a DA with pads and compounds so you can start from nothing.
What pads do I need to go with a compound kit?
One pad per cut, at minimum. A firm cutting pad or microfibre pad for the heavy compound, a medium intermediate pad for the one step, and a soft finishing pad for the polish. Two of each is better, because a pad loaded with spent compound stops working and you'll want a clean one for the next panel.

Most kits list recommended pads on the product page, and our pad stacks and kits are put together to match. Never share a pad between compounds. Cutting compound left in a finishing pad will haze the paint you just corrected.
Which compound kit should I start with?
There isn't one right answer, it comes down to your paint, your machine and how often you polish. The picks at the top of the page show what's selling best and what the pros reach for, so start there.

A few worth reading up on. The Waxit Compounds Kit mixes brands, a CARPRO cutting compound, Scholl S20 Black as the one step and an NV finishing polish, chosen because they work well together. The Scholl Compounds Kit keeps it all in one family, S2 Black, S20 Black and S30+, all low dust with an easy wipe off. The Koch Chemie Compounds Kit is the one detailers tend to buy, with Heavy Cut, Fine Cut and Micro Cut covering the full range. Whichever you pick, grab a set of pads at the same time.
