Interior Brushes

4.8from 220 reviews across this range

An interior detailing brush gets into the places a cloth can't, the air vents, switch gaps, seat seams, stitching and the join between the dash and the windscreen where dust settles and stays. The soft ones lift dust and work cleaner into textured plastics without scratching, the firmer ones agitate carpets and cloth seats, and the leather brushes have bristles gentle enough to clean grain without marking it. Most people start with a brush set that covers all three.

FAQ's: Interior Brushes

Soft or firm, boar or synthetic, and whether a brush will mark the trim. These are the questions we get asked the most.

Still unsure? Ask us ›
Which interior brush do I need for which job?
Three types cover almost everything. A soft detailing brush, usually boar hair or fine synthetic, is for dust and light cleaning on the dash, vents, console, screen surrounds and any piano black trim that scratches if you look at it wrong. That's the one you'll use most. A carpet and upholstery brush has firmer, denser bristles for agitating cleaner into cloth seats and carpets so it lifts the dirt rather than just wetting it. And a leather brush sits between the two, soft enough not to scuff the finish, firm enough to get cleaner into the grain and the perforations.

Sets like the CARPRO, Koch Chemie or Vikan ranges give you a few sizes of the soft brush, which is the one that gets used every clean.
Will a detailing brush scratch my dashboard or trim?
A soft one won't, a dirty one might. Boar hair and the softer synthetic brushes are used on gloss black trim and clear screens all day in detailing studios without marking them. What scratches is grit trapped in the bristles from the last job, so keep the interior brushes for the interior, don't use the one that did the wheels, and rinse them out after each use. On piano black and screens, use the brush dry or with a light mist of interior cleaner to hold the dust rather than push it around.

Metal ferrules are the other thing to watch. The better brushes have a rubber or plastic collar so the metal never touches the trim, and it's worth checking before you buy a cheap one.
How do I clean the air vents and tight gaps?
A vent brush or a soft round brush pushed gently into the slats, working from the top down so the dust falls out rather than in. For the dust that's stuck, a light mist of interior cleaner on the brush rather than on the vent, since liquid down a vent ends up in the ducting. Compressed air or a Tornador is the fastest way to blow the loose stuff out of vents, seat rails and under the console before you vacuum, and detailing swabs get the last of it out of the switch gaps and around the gear shifter where no brush fits.

Do the vents first in an interior clean. Whatever comes out of them lands on the seats and carpet, so it saves doing those twice.
What's the best brush for pet hair and carpets?
Pet hair needs a rubber brush, not bristles. Rubber pulls the hair up into a clump you can pick off, where a normal brush just moves it around. A dedicated pet hair brush or the rubber side of a 3 in 1 brush does most of the work before the vacuum comes out. For ground-in dirt on carpets and mats, a firm carpet brush with a good cleaner lifts it, and if you're doing it regularly a drill brush attachment takes the scrubbing out of it. Follow up with a vacuum or extractor while the carpet is still damp so the loosened dirt actually leaves the car.
