Who doesn’t love the look, feel and even the smell of clean, supple leather? If you’re flaunting these types of seats in your car, it’s always well worth the investment to choose the right products to keep them in top shape. As they’re a prominent feature of a vintage or higher-end vehicle, putting the shine and sleekness back into this type of material is usually high on the priority list for car owners. And that’s exactly where we come in.
We understand the many types of leather conditioners
In the same way that there are many different types of cars, there’s a lot of variety in the types of leather used during manufacturing. If it’s an older or vintage car, the seats could be made out of thick hides; whereas, modern cars tend to sport newer types of synthesised alternatives. In some cases, they may even be equipped with specialised coloured or textured variants.
Because of these differences, it’s important to understand the effect a product can have on the integrity of the material. Generally, when used for car seats, it goes through a lot of wear and tear. Beyond the daily grind, it can also be affected by changing temperatures, direct sunlight, and damage from your clothing (not to mention the kids or pets).
While this type of material is a crowd-favourite, it requires T.L.C to stop it from drying out, creasing and eventually cracking. It’s for this reason that regular maintenance is paramount, and if it’s not high up on your to-dos, it should be.
Luckily, there’s a lot you can do to rejuvenate neglected seats like this. Even if you’ve bought a car that’s seen better days, with the right products, you can get it all back to that brand-new, market-ready look.
This type of material also responds really well to leather conditioners, which gives it back its moisture. This is usually achieved through the inclusion of natural oils and proteins.
How to use leather protection to get your shine back
Step one in the process is the cleaning. Work with your car in the shade or under cover and make sure the surface is cool and dry when you begin. Start by vacuuming thoroughly to remove any dirt particles, crumbs or other small objects, especially in the folds and creases of the seats. Use one of our good-quality shampoos or cleansers to work over the area. Follow the instructions and ensure you finish it all off with a gentle brush, cloth or sponge – as directed on the packaging.
Step two is the conditioning, and probably where the fun begins. A good, specially formulated solution – like those in the Waxit collection – nourishes and rejuvenates the fibres of the material. Like always, read up on the instructions and make sure you understand how to apply the solution before you get started.
